“The unsaid, for me, exerts great power.” – Louise Glück
Another week, another newsletter packed with exciting news and stories about literature and the people behind it.
Last week, I was enormously privileged to be invited to host not one, not two but three events at Le Bon Marché, a leading department store in Paris which had the beautiful idea of hosting a month-long literary pop-up – and by pop-up, I mean a vast cosmological space – focused on books, literary merch and live events with authors and other figures of interest. The pop-up was called “Mise en Page” and was put together by the visionary retailer Sarah Andelman, founder of the store Colette in Paris who is now putting her skills at the service of retailers & brands trying to provide cool & exciting experiences to their customers.
My first event was an interview (en français!) with the author Arthur Larrue whose career I’ve been following for a while. His latest book, La Diagonale Alekhine (The Alekhine Diagonal), was a fictionalised account of the French Russian chess grandmaster-turned-Nazi collaborator who met with a sticky end. We talked about four books that had influenced his life and his writing, and his eclectic choices included works by Gogol, Faulkner, Apollinaire & Manchette. That episode will be out on my podcast in mid June (again, in French).
