Be a fool more frequently
Before Howards End and A Passage to India, a young E.M. Forster sat down on New Year’s Eve, 1904, and did what many of us do after a third sherry: he made resolutions. He was 25, recently graduated from Cambridge, and on the cusp of his literary career. This list is less ‘great author in the making’ and more ‘slightly anxious overthinker with a fountain pen’ (my guy!). It's part personal pep talk, part Victorian chaos, and entirely endearing. I’m glad I’m not the only one who needs to steel and browbeat myself to get out of bed before 9am.
