Each week, I’m selecting a short story to share with you. No more than 15 or so pages, each think of them as bite-sized entrées into a genre, author, or style.
I always love getting the opportunity to highlight work from our incredible previous podcast guests. This week on the menu we have Ingrid Persaud’s The Sweet Sop. Ingrid and I had an excellent chat a few months ago (check out the episode here if you haven’t already!) about her great new book, The Lost Love Songs of Boysie Singh. It’s a novelised retelling of the true story of real-life 1930s Trinidad gangster, Boysie Singh, and the four central women in his life. I completely loved it, and would strongly recommend to anyone that they pick it up.
Today’s story explores the complex relationship between a son and his estranged father, who bond over their shared love of chocolate during the father’s final days. The story blends humour and heartbreak, revealing how small, shared moments can bridge deep emotional gaps. It also won the 2017 Granta Magazine short story prize, and the 2018 BBC National Short Story Award! Give it a read, and let me know what you think.
